    I feel like people who push self publishing don’t realise the kind of privileged position one must be in to afford all those costs, not to say all self published authors come from money because that is in no way true.

    I am working my way through Truby's book now (when I stumbled across your video). 'The Anatomy of Story' is dense and "advanced". However one thing to keep in mind (which you haven't mentioned yet) is that it is primarily aimed at writing screenplays. In screenplays (which are written for the making of a movie) some of Truby's advice can be a little claustrophobic for a novel. Novels have a bit more room to explore than does a tightly written (and budget/production cost conscious) screenplay. In the back of Truby's mind (though at least through page 230) he has not directly said as much, but you can tell he is concerned with creating too many locations (i.e. sets that cost money to build or locations you have to travel to, which costs money for travel and to house and feed actors and crew members); Whereas in a novel, we have no such budgetary constraints. If I want to include things which would be expensive to build or require costly special effects to film, I don't have to worry about that. So keep that in mind as you read; the novel is a different medium than a movie (and the screenplay is written for film). So, for novelists, read and take what you can from his book, but some of his advice needs adjustment when applying it to novel writing (just as 'Save the Cat' [written for screenwriters] was adjusted and rewritten and became 'Save the Cat Writes a Novel' for novelists.

    Ah Ha! You finally revealed the designing principle of your novel at 14:42 when you revealed that you wanted to write a novel that showed the development of your protagonist over the course of 24 hours. Similar to Ulysses; In a modern day Odyssey through the city, OVER THE COURSE OF A SINGLE DAY, one man finds a father, and the other man finds a son. This combined with a principle similar to Tootsie's designing principle ("force a male chauvinist to live as a woman"), or in your book "Force a chubby girl who feels worthless to enter a beauty contest" leads to your designing principle (add them together) : "Force a chubby girl who feels worthless to enter a beauty pageant and follow her development over the course of 24 hours."

    I love "disentangleable!" @ 14:01

  • @captainnolan5062
    @captainnolan5062 9 днів тому

    Because Truby does not explain the designing principle well and makes it needlessly complicated (as you point out), you have come to the conclusion that "you can just skip this step." I would advise against skipping it. It is easier thank you think. Look at Harry Potter: The designing principle for the Harry Potter series that the author chose to use was to show Harry's development from a boy to a man by following him through seven years at Hogwarts school for Wizards using one book for each year. That is how the story was designed. Pretty simple.

  • @captainnolan5062
    @captainnolan5062 9 днів тому

    The "theme" of A Christmas Carol is not "Trace the rebirth of a man" as you state at 5:49. That is the "story Process." The theme is more along the lines of: "Is it better to be a rich greedy miser, or to live for others and show kindness and generosity.

  • @captainnolan5062
    @captainnolan5062 9 днів тому

    I'm not sure you have described the design principle correctly. For example, in your book, I would say your design principle would be: "Force a chubby girl who feels worthless to enter a beauty pageant and follow her development over the course of 24 hours" (more along the lines of the designing principle in Tootsie; "force a male chauvinist to live as a woman"). That said, I don't think that Truby does a good job explaining this concept. I think we should view it more as: what kind of framework am I going to use to organize (and deliver) my story. For example in the Godfather the author uses the framework of a 'fairy tale', in Meet Me in St. Louis the author uses the framework of 'the four seasons'; in A Christmas Carol the author uses the framework of the 'past, present and future'; and in your book you use the framework of a 'beauty pageant.'

  • @alyce4674
    @alyce4674 10 днів тому

    Super insightful! Five books in seven years is amazing! I thought I'd be that prolific, but noooope. Lol. Really cool to confirm that the drafting process isn't necessarily linear. Not every successive book takes less time to write. Yes, you get better and more confident about your craft and that cuts down the time, but there are so many factors outside of the work that play into it. Also, I love that you actually are tracking when you start and finish your drafts. I'm not sure I can do that for all of my WIPs unless I find a journal entry where I mention it, or maybe check the creation date of one my Scrivener files or Google docs 😅 The zero drafting concept is interesting to me. When I think of how I normally start books, it usually starts with a scene that pops into my head that I just riff on for a few weeks. Then I go back and try to make sense of what the hell I was writing by creating a full plot outline and work on the draft after that. So I guess my brainstorming and first draft kind of blend together? I do look forward to being able to analyze how I work in the future, but to date, I've only finished multiple drafts of two books, and have outlines/partial drafts for too many other ones. But I think I can say that so far, I intentionally take about 4 weeks off between drafts before going back to it.

    You'll laugh at me for responding to a 3-year-old video, but how do you incorporate this with an alpha/beta or CP? Do you have a CP to look it all over as you work on your outline, or do you wait until you have a rough draft written first to give it to someone?

    • @LindsayPuckett
      @LindsayPuckett 17 днів тому

      I don't usually get any feedback until I have a 3rd draft! I like to make the book the best I can first BUT everyone works differently. One of my CPs gives me her outlines, and one gives me her 2nd drafts!

    I completely agree about POTC! It is one of my all time favorite movies to this day! We would definitely have been friends as teens! 😆 One of the things I was impressed by the last time I watched it was how each paring of the trio has at least one scene together in the earlier part of the movie so that by the time the story really kicks off, you’ve already seen them all together and know their dynamics! It’s so impressive! I think you’d find a lot of interest in that essay! 😂❤️

    Okay, Lindsay, I -need- you to listen to Worlds Beyond Measure. It's also a DnD actual play with Brennan Lee Mulligan, Aabria Iyengar, Erika Ishi, and Lou Wilson and it is the MOST wholesome MOST whimsical (but like a little horror and spooky) and I just adore them. And that's what I've been listening to this month, and after everything you've described in this video, I think you'll absolutely eat it up like I have been! xo

    Cincy? Are you in Ohio or Kentucky? I’m up here in the NE portion, and I used to make trips down to Cincy for Jungle Jim’s, Newport Aquarium, and comic cons so often.

    I love Jenn too! I've been needing to read her books! I agree that she is yellow, maybe like a sunflower yellow. Have you read "Can't Spell Treason Without Tea" (queer cozy fantasy) yet? I just finished "Gwen and Art are Not in Love" (queer honestly cozy historical fiction with Arthurian influences) yesterday and it was adorable!!! I have been in a deep recovery place since my last final for the year. I am starting to get my creativity back and my joy of reading.

    I'm right up there with you having watched Pirates of the Caribbean way too many times. If you ever actually do a video essay on it, I would watch the hell out of it. And I'm also in the process of getting into DnD. The good thing about having a lot of siblings is that I get to force them to try DnD with me. (also, I've just recently started watching your channel and have spent the last week binging your videos) (now excuse me; I need to go watch Pirates of the Caribbean again)

    I second everything on POTC! I watched it again last summer and my reaction was the same! Like wow, it really is a banger of a screenplay! It was so fun looking at it through a structure lens.

    Your videos give me life. Thanks for posting. I finished up the latest draft in May and re-entered the query trenches in the past two weeks or so. I have such a good feeling that this is the right timing and the right book. Fingers crossed. I’ve started reading The Clackity (MG) and The Church Beneath the Roots (Adult). Went back to Toronto, then to a horror author convention. Got a brain blast for my next middle grade horror and have been brainstorming. I should make a wrap up video…
